Chicago Movie Theater’s Holiday Lineups

‘Tis the season for watching flicks, and Chicago has a healthy variety of theatre options with interesting films that go beyond the expected Hollywood array. Read on to learn more about 3 theaters to check out in December including notable films and events to look forward to in the month ahead.

  1. Music Box Theatre, 3733 N Southport Avenue

This iconic theatre located in the Southport Corridor neighborhood has been holding down the fort since the late 1920s. Much of the original decor remains with twinkling ceilings and Arabeesque decorations that impress on their own. The month of December is particularly jam packed at this theatre with a holiday film lineup that has a little something for everyone. The most notorious of the holiday lineup is the Christmas sing-a-long double feature that shows White Christmas and It’s a Wonderful Life back-to-back with a guest appearance from Santa Clause and live organ carols that movie-goers are encouraged to sing along to. This special event is happening over the course of 10 days so you have plenty of opportunities to join in on the fun. Get your tickets sooner rather than later to guarantee a slice of the festivities!

  1. The Logan Theatre, 2646 N Milkwaukee Ave

Another long standing Chicago institution, this movie space opened in 1915 and serves the Logan Square neighborhood with its art deco flare, cocktail bar, and comfy seats that keep people coming back for more. The theatre offers a range of movie types from big superhero franchise films to independent oldies. One of the spaces more notable event series is their consistent late night showings that start at midnight. In December most of these films are holiday themed including a Star Wars holiday special with bingo, Gremlins, and a Christmas Story. 1. Doc Films, 1212 E 59th Street

This small theatre started in 1932 and is run to this day by film students at the University of Chicago. It’s the oldest student film society according to the MoMa and sticks to its educational roots by often hosting film presentations and discussions. It emphasizes the importance of low-cost, high-quality content that is accessible to a range of audiences. The programming themes are broken down into days of the week with categories changing each season. Currently, as the Autumn season closes, you can expect to see “screwball romance through the ages” on Mondays and “programmers’ picks” on Fridays to name a few.
