March 22 marks the release of two highly anticipated albums from two badass female singer/songwriters: Adrianne Lenker, lead vocalist and guitarist for beloved indie group Big Thief, releases her first solo LP “Bright Future” (4AD). Kate Crutchfield, also known as Waxahatchee, continues her foray into americana-tinged indie with her new album “Tigers Blood” (ANTI-).
Big Thief have been making waves in the indie world ever since the release of their debut album “Masterpiece” back in 2016, but most recently with 2022’s “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You”. That album blew up – coinciding with a rigorous touring schedule, including a string of headlining festival dates (such as Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival), more people were talking about Big Thief than ever. Which explains why there has been plenty of buzz around frontwoman Adrianne Lenker’s first solo LP – and the music backs up the hype. Sparse yet beautiful arranged instrumentation backs Adrianne’s singular voice, waxing poetic on love, loss, grief, and rebirth. It’s an emotional journey, and one that I’ll happily take again and again.
Meanwhile, Waxahatchee also released a stellar album. Katie Crutchfield formed the group from the ashes of a previous project, and the new record “Tigers Blood” is, in my eyes (and ears), the height of her creative output so far. It’s an Americana album first and foremost, led by the unstoppably catchy single “Right Back To It” (featuring MJ Lenderman on backing vocals and guitar). Other, rockier songs on the album still have that southern twang to them, which Crutchfield no doubt picked up from growing up in Alabama.
